Insomnia


DEFINITION

Insomnia is difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. This condition is one of the common conditions and many complain about. With this condition you do not usually stay awake and feel refreshed. Insomnia can affect not only the energy and mood, but also your health, work performance and quality of life.

Sleep needs vary for each person. Many adults generally takes seven to eight hours. More than one in three adults sometimes have chronic insomnia.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of insomnia include:
• Trouble sleeping at night
• Waking at night
• Waking up too early
• Not feeling refreshed after waking up
• Tired or sleepy during the day
• Easy to anger, depression or anxiety
• Difficult to concentrate
• Increased risk of errors and accidents
• Headache
• gastrointestinal symptoms


Causes & Risk Factors
Cause

Insomnia is most often caused by some other factors, such as medical conditions that cause pain or use of substances that affect sleep. Common causes of insomnia include:
• Stress
• Restlessness
• Depression
• Certain drugs that cause sleep problems
• Caffeine, nicotine and alcohol
• Certain medical conditions
• Changes in the environment or work schedule
• poor sleep habits
• "Learning" insomnia, such as watching or reading late into the night
• Eating too much food in the evening

Risk factors

Enlarged if the risk of insomnia:
  • Women are twice as likely to have insomnia. Changes in hormones during the cycle and menopause play a role
  • More than 60 years old
  • Experiencing mental health disorders
  • Experiencing stress
  • Working at night
